Applying for Jobs in Germany
Successfully navigating the job market in Germany requires not only a basic knowledge of how to correctly formulate your cover letter and application, but also a solid understanding both of what German employers value in an applicant and how the German job market functions. What does a good resume look like, and what does it mean to have a “good career”? What does success look like? How is it measured? How do Germans approach the application process, and how might that differ from what I’m familiar with in my home country?
In this course, we’ll go over the following:
- What are relevant cultural values that play a role in the German job market and in the workplace?
- How is the job market structured? How can I find out the types of jobs that people with my skill set or educational background hold in Germany?
- How do I apply for a job in Germany? What formal standards, processes, and rules should I be aware of?
- What should my application look like? What should be included?
- How do I format a CV for the German job market? What do I need to know about application photos? What is important – and what isn’t – for German employers?
- What is the purpose of a cover letter in Germany and what will potential employers expect to see? What should I avoid?
- What do I need to know about interviewing for a job in Germany?
- How important is it to learn German? How does my role as an applicant with an international background influence my chances?
This workshop is designed for international students who would like to learn more about applying for a job in Germany.
