Sustainability in Development – a new paradigm?
The traditional development policies of the ‘West’ were strongly criticized for reproducing the very economical and social dependencies they were meant to
overcome. The Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) in 200X and, to an even larger extent, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 20XX were intended to be a visible
international paradigm shift towards more inclusive and culturally sensitive development assistance.
Questions we might discuss in this seminar include:
we might discuss in this seminar include: do the MDGs offer a new non-colonial path towards development or are they simply the
expression of a capitalist world order? Can there be a non-paternalistic understanding of
development?
After familiarizing ourselves with the most important theories of sustainable development, we will discuss the SDGs in greater detail before taking a
critical look at the SDGs from a post-colonial perspective.Towards the end of term, we will visit one of the world’s largest NGOs and get first-hand insights into its work on the
ground (tbc).
