Zielsetzung

The lecture provides an overview to theories and concepts related to strategic management. Interactive teaching methods and case studies provide best pre-requisites to excise and apply theoretical contents taught in class in light of business reality (applied science method).


Participants become familiar with strategic management decision processes against the background of international value added activities. The seminar delivers insights to vital important factors for obtaining sustainable competitive advantages.


Participants should be able to take various stakeholder perspectives in light of a corporate’s social responsibility in modern societies.

• Basic terms, objectives and algorithms of strategic management processes


• Analysis methods of the firms' macro, industry and micro environment


• Strategic options on top management, strategic business unit and functional level


• Strategy implementation and control


• International market entry strategies (e.g. international joint ventures, franchising, OEM )


• Challenges and limits of strategic management methods


• Application of approaches in selected case studies

Interactive lecture with case studies (4 SWS, contact time: 60 h, face-to-face, day and evening courses, possibly supported by digital/distance learning material)

Lernergebnisse und Kompetenzen

Upon successful completion participants have acquired the following competencies:


ILO 1: Become familiar with theories, concepts and methodologies of strategic management


ILO 2: Learn approaches of developing and measuring strategic success as well as understanding the limits of strategic management methods


ILO 3: Apply theoretical knowledge through case study team work and presentation of solutions scenarios


ILO 4: Be able to transform skills and methods gained in the lectures into a management reality perspective

Bemerkung

Verification of competence acquisition:


Assessment: Oral exam (20-30 minutes)


Questions verify knowledge and competencies of the candidate related to the lecture contents.


Knowledge questions require students to describe definitions, theories and concepts (ILO 1, ILO 2)


Application questions target to verify competences and analysis methods in light of business reality reviewing the case studies as discussed in class (ILO 3, ILO 4)
